We live in a fast-paced world. Microwaves cook our food instantly; we drive 85 miles per hour or more on the freeways and highways, and our homes are being built twice as fast than in years past. In spite of all the fast, fast, and faster that we are surrounded by, we still find ourselves having to wait.
Why do we have to wait? We have to wait in the grocery store line, we have to wait in the bank line, at the doctor’s office and the dentist’s office, we wait, wait, and wait some more. Waiting is not a fun activity and of course we don’t like to wait. We want everything to happen right now, but there is no way around waiting.
There are many stories in the bible where people had to wait on God to do something for them. God promised Abraham that he would have a son and that he would be the father of many nations. However He did not tell Abraham he would have to wait 25 years before the promise would come to pass. David was anointed king at the age of 16, but he had to wait 14 years before he became king. David experienced a lot of difficulty in the time he was waiting to become king. Saul, the reigning king, was jealous of David and sought to have him killed.
Waiting is not an easy task. Sometimes it may even seem like the Lord is ignoring us and that we are on this journey of life alone. Many times our time of waiting can be a time of mending or renewal. It can also be a time of rejuvenation and restoration. Most of all waiting can be a time that God is teaching, training, or educating us in a particular area of our lives. If we want to make the most of our time and discover what God wants us to learn, we must seek to discover what truths He has in His Word for us. Drink slowly from the fountain of His Word and be refreshed.
There is a way to wait. Usually we complain and moan, groan and grumble like the Children of Israel did; Lamentations 3:24-26 (Amplified) tells us how to wait. “The Lord is my portion or share, says my living being (my inner self); therefore will I hope in Him and wait expectantly for Him. The Lord is good to those who wait hopefully and expectantly for Him, to those who seek Him [inquire of and for Him and require Him by right of necessity and on the authority of God’s word]. It is good that one should hope in and wait quietly for the salvation (the safety and ease) of the Lord.” If you never give up hope there is a rainbow waiting at the end of the storm.
