30 Days Of…Day 6 – “Make Your Walking Count”

In the past several months, I’ve been on a journey to improve my health. With that in mind I started to walk more and to make my walking count.

Every month I receive a newsletter from my healthcare provider. The newsletter usually gives information about getting healthier by doing things like eating more fruits and veggies, being more active, and getting the proper rest. In one particular newsletter there was an article about walking 10,000 steps a day. After reading the article, I decided this was something I could handle. Before making my final decision, I went on the internet to find more information about 10,000 steps. I found an amazing amount of information. I also found an article on the about.com website by Wendy Bumgardner, entitled “Should You Walk 10,000 Steps Per Day for Weight Loss? She says in her article 10,000 steps per day match exercise recommendations.  (http://walking.about.com/od/measure/f/10000steps.htm),   Getting 10,000 steps in per day equals the recommendation for 30 minutes per day of exercise.

How many miles it 10,000 steps? 10,000 is equal to 5 miles.  How do you get at least 10,000 steps per day? Here are a few suggestions: 

  • Walk, walk, and more walking (just move) – if you are at work, get up from your desk and walk to the restroom, walk to your co-workers office or cubicle instead of emailing and take the stairs when you go to lunch.
  • Take a break and walk around the campus or building where you are employed.
  • At home when you are cooking and moving back and forth you get in a lot of steps. Also when you are cleaning you get in more steps.
  • Instead of trying to get a parking spot right at the front door of the grocery store or the mall, park further away and walk.
  • Walk to the store if you are not planning to buy a lot of grocery.
  • Walk to visit a neighbor.
  • Walk to the park.

There are many ways to get those steps in.  You just have to do it. Buy a pedometer to help you keep track of your steps and your miles. Write your steps and miles down in a log and you will be amazed how quickly those steps and miles add up.

Take your feet where God leads you. Get up off that sofa, get out of that recliner chair, and get out of that bed, get those feet moving and take care of the temple that God has given you.
